“Discoloration” is a broad term for anything that ruins the uniformity of your skin. It includes the sun damage (browns) from your beach days, the broken capillaries (reds) around your nose, and the dull, uneven tone that comes with age. At Sapien, we categorize discoloration into two main targets: Pigment (Browns) and Vascular (Reds). We use a spectrum of light, laser, and chemical modalities to shatter pigment and collapse vessels, restoring a clear, filtered look to your skin.

The “No Sun” Rule: This is the most critical rule for discoloration. You cannot treat pigment if you are tan. Lasers cannot distinguish between your sun spot and your tan, leading to burns. You must be at your natural baseline skin tone.
Stop the Bleachers: Discontinue use of hydroquinone, retinol, or brightening creams 3–5 days prior to avoid over-sensitizing the skin.
Cover Up: If you are treating the face, bring a wide-brimmed hat to wear when leaving the clinic.
Cold Sores: History of cold sores? Let us know. Light and heat can trigger a flare-up; we may prescribe an antiviral.

Sensation:
BBL/IPL: Feels like a “hot rubber band snap.” Quick, sharp flashes of heat.
ClearV: A sharp, quick sting as the vessel is zapped.
ClearSilk/HydraFacial: Warm, relaxing, and painless.
Microneedling: Vibration and scratchiness.
The “Flash”: For light treatments (BBL/IPL), the light is very bright. We provide medical-grade eye shields, but you will still see flashes.

Browns (The Coffee Grounds): For BBL and IPL, pigmented spots will darken immediately after treatment. They will look like sprinkled pepper or coffee grounds on your face. Do not pick them. They will flake off naturally over 3–7 days.
Reds (The Flush): For ClearV and ClearSilk, you may look pink or flushed for a few hours. Spider veins may disappear instantly or look darker (bruised) before fading away.
Resurfacing (The Peel): For Chemical Peels and CoolPeel, expect dryness and peeling as the discolored skin sheds

Strict Sun Avoidance: You are investing in removing sun damage. Going back into the sun without SPF 50+ will bring the spots back immediately (often darker than before).
No Picking: Prematurely removing the crusting or flaking skin can lead to scarring. Let the process happen naturally.
Vitamin C: Once healed, using a Vitamin C serum daily is your best defense against pigment returning.

It’s about the target.
Pigment (Browns): We target melanin. The light heats up the dark spot until it shatters. (Best: BBL, IPL, Peels).
Vascular (Reds): We target hemoglobin (blood). The laser heats up the blood vessel until it collapses and the body reabsorbs it. (Best: ClearV, ClearSilk, BBL).
Melasma is tricky because heat can sometimes make it worse. We generally avoid high-heat lasers like IPL/BBL for Melasma. Instead, we recommend Chemical Peels or Microneedling (which are non-thermal) or CoolPeel (low heat). A consultation is mandatory for Melasma clients.
Most clients see a dramatic difference after just one BBL or IPL session. However, to clear 80–90% of the damage, we typically recommend a series of 3 treatments.
Yes! The hands and décolleté often show age first. BBL and CoolPeel are incredible for clearing “liver spots” on the body. Just note that body skin heals slower than facial skin (10–14 days vs. 5–7 days).
They won’t “come back,” but you can develop new ones. If you go out in the sun without protection, your skin will produce new pigment. Maintenance treatments (1–2 times a year) help keep the canvas clear.
Yes: After BBL, IPL, ClearSilk, and ClearV (mineral makeup is best).
No: Wait 24–48 hours after Microneedling, Chemical Peels, or CoolPeel.
